FAQs

Safe Dayz TM is a feature on the Momentum app that is designed to measure and reward safe driving behaviour, whether you’re a driver or a passenger.

  • Using telematics technology, the feature measures your driving habits. The feature captures driving data such as speed, GPS location, mileage, and driving-style elements (such as if you brake hard, or accelerate too fast) per journey.
  • This information is analysed to create a driving behaviour score. For each journey, we’ll give you an overall score together with sub-scores for each of the specific driving behaviours. The scores for all the journeys travelled in a day are combined to calculate a daily score - when you score 80% or more for a day, we’ll reward you with a Safe Day. The safer you travel, the more Safe Dayz you’ll earn. The more Safe Dayz you earn, the more Multiply points and Momentum Safety Bonus  cashback rewards you’ll qualify for.
  • Please note that journeys where the distance or duration of the journey is too short, will not be scored and will reflect as "invalid journeys"
  • You can earn Multiply points and earn up to a 30% cashback on your eligible Momentum Insure policy. You’ll get the most out of Safe Dayz TM when you are an eligible Momentum Insure client and Multiply Premier member with a completed Safety Score questionnaire. You can complete the Safety Score questionnaire by clicking here.
  • For every Safe Day earned, you will earn one Multiply point (maximum of 80 points per year). These points count towards improving your Multiply status. The higher your Multiply status, the more Multiply rewards, the higher your Momentum Safety Bonus cashback reward.
  • Drive safely according to the rules of the road to achieve a daily score of 80% or more. If you’re a passenger, your journey score will be calculated based on the driver’s behaviour.
  • Review your journey scores and the behaviours affecting your scores so you can identify any areas of improvement.
  • Make sure that you have allowed all the relevant permission settings on your cell phone, that your GPS settings are switched on, and that your device has a strong enough signal during your journeys so that it can be recorded. Check your device settings on your cell phone.
  • When you travel by Gautrain, you’ll automatically score 100% for the journey. The Gautrain journeys as well as all other journeys completed on a day will be used to calculate your daily score.
  • Be a Multiply Premier client.
  • Ensure that you have regular access to internet connectivity for your journey information to sync to earn Safe Dayz .
  • On the days when you do not travel on the roads, you’ll be rewarded with a non-travelling Safe Day. Ensure that your device’s settings are optimised to record your journeys so that the feature can detect your non-travelling days. Please allow for up to 7 days for non-travelling Safe Dayz to reflect.

For each journey, the App collects and analyses data based on the time of day, familiarity of roads, acceleration, braking, cornering, and speed. A score is calculated for each of these elements and combined using their individual levels of importance to determine the journey score.

Each journey score is multiplied by the distance of that journey. These scores are added up and the total score is divided by the total kilometres travelled on that day. It is a distance-weighted score.

  • Each day is split into time zones and allocated a risk rating, ranging from very low risk to very high risk. The distance travelled in each time zone is considered when calculating the time-of-day score. Driving in lower-risk time zones will be associated with higher scores.
  • Try to avoid driving at night when visibility is poorer and there are more impaired drivers on the road which leads to riskier conditions. The less distance travelled during these riskier times, the higher your time-of-day score.
  • The Momentum App uses your cell phone to see how often you exceed the G-force limits for acceleration, braking, and cornering. Keep within these limits to reduce your accident risk.
  • Your cell phone will provide data on how often you accelerate rapidly, brake harshly, and how fast and smoothly you take corners.

We know that braking harshly may be required at times. Your score is calculated for all journeys travelled in a day therefore one occurrence in one journey should not have a significant impact on your score. The most important thing is your safety.

We will use the speed recorded on your cell phone and compare this to the road-type speed limit. Your score will be based on the distance you went over the speed limit and the severity (for example if you drove 120km/h in an 80km/h zone for 10km).

If you suspect that the speed limit information is wrong, please contact us for support.

We will consider the number of times you travel on a particular route and how recent your driving experience on that route is, to determine your familiarity with the road you are travelling on.

  • We track your cell phone use while you’re driving. You can use a hands-free kit or other Bluetooth connections to safely communicate while driving. However, if you text, manually dial a number or take calls while your car is moving, your journey will be marked as a distracted journey. Please note that this will not affect your journey or score for that day.
  • Ensure that you focus on the road and keep you and your passengers safe by putting your cell phone away or using a hands-free kit or Bluetooth connection.
  • On the days when you do not travel on the roads, you’ll be rewarded with a non-travelling Safe Day. To ensure that you receive your non-travelling Safe Dayz TM you need to make sure that your device’s settings remain optimised, and that your device and location settings remain on.
  • The number of consecutive non-travelling Safe Dayz TM is limited so it is your responsibility to ensure that your device is recording journeys accurately and consistently. If you are struggling to get your device to record journeys, please contact us as soon as possible so that we can assist in resolving the issue.

No, unless you are a passenger in your vehicle, the device is not connected to your vehicle and will record journeys whenever your cell phone is present, and all the settings are optimised for recording.

The journey will be recorded and scored regardless of who is driving and in what vehicle you are travelling. When you’re a passenger, your journey score is calculated on the driver’s behaviour. Encourage the driver to maintain good driving behaviour so that you receive a good score.

No, each user has a unique identification number and the App cannot be registered on two devices at the same time

  • Ensure that your device’s settings remain optimised, and all journeys are recorded to ensure that your rewards aren’t adversely impacted.
  • Always maintain a safe following distance.
  • Try not to drive late at night or in the early hours of the morning and avoid unfamiliar routes where possible.
  • Take a balanced approach to cornering.
  • Keep within the speed limit and be aware of other road users.
  • You can safely and responsibly use your cellphone in the car by connecting via Bluetooth.

The Momentum app will collect the following information for each journey you take:

  • GPS data (location information, speed)
  • Acceleration, speeding, braking and cornering derived from GPS data
  • Time of day
  • Confirmation of when the Momentum app is being turned on and off
  • Cell phone ID
  • Mileage
  • Battery level and charging status
  • Bluetooth and wi-fi connection information
  • Internet connectivity (cellular or wi-fi).

For every journey, the Momentum App collects your data, such as hard braking, speeding, cornering and acceleration, for analysis and calculation of your journey score. Your driving data is then securely transmitted to the Safe Dayz feature to display your scores. We will not use your driving data for any other purpose without your consent. If you are a Momentum Insure client, journey data will also not be used in the validation of any claims.

Yes, your data will be collected when your journey is in progress.

  • No (except for Huawei – explanation below), you don’t need a mobile data plan, but you do need wi-fi access. Your driving data is collected using your cellphone’s sensors and GPS. If you do not have a mobile data plan, your journey information will be uploaded once you connect to a wi-fi network at home, work, vehicle, or any other location. We reasonably expect data consumption to be like other apps using GPS.
  • If you are using a Huawei device with HMS please make sure that you have an active internet connection (either wi-fi or mobile data) while travelling. This is to ensure that journeys are being recorded accurately.
  • The effect varies depending on the cell phone make and model. However, battery consumption will be like any other app using GPS signal.
  • If your cell phone’s battery level is below 15%, the Momentum App will not start recording the journey or will automatically stop recording a journey whilst you’re driving. The reason for this is that we don’t want our App to run your battery flat by recording a journey.

Enabling battery saver mode (especially on Huawei devices) will negatively impact the ability of your cellphone to record your journeys.

You need either an iPhone, Android or Huawei device with HMS enabled. The Safe Dayz TM feature is optimised for iOS 10 and above and Android/HMS OS versions 7 and above.

Please note that the Safe Dayz TM feature is not compatible with tablets.

No, the App runs in the background of your cell phone and will automatically start recording whenever driving movement is detected. However, when you want to view your journey scores and details, you’ll need to log on to the App.

Please click on the “Run device check” option on the Safe Dayz TM settings page and check if all mandatory settings have been enabled. If all your device settings are correct and you are still unable to record, please contact us for support.

The Momentum app starts recording journeys only once you reach a threshold speed. However, if you notice considerable differences of more than 3km between the actual journey start and the start location on the app, please contact us.

No, each user identification number is device specific. The cell phone from which you last logged in to Safe Dayz will be the device used to record your journeys going forward. If you wish to use a new cell phone, please register for Safe Dayz using the new cell phone to get a new identification for the device. If you don’t do this, the last logged-in device will continue recording your journeys.

Cellphones are unique and work differently from one another. Below are guidelines to make your Safe Dayz TM experience seamless.

The Momentum app does not transfer any of your personal data from your phone. The location data used for various features are  anonymous. Below is the list of cellphone permissions required across the different operating systems and how the permissions are used:

  1. Locations services (in the background) – used for capturing driving data.
If your location settings are switched off, we won’t be able to collect your journey information and you’ll miss out on being rewarded with Safe Dayz TM. When your location settings are disabled, a pop-up will appear on the Safe Dayz TM screen to prompt you to enable this feature so that you continue earning rewards.
  2. Motion activity – used for automatic journey start and stop.
  3. Storage – is used to get accurate location updates on Huawei devices.
  4. Cellphone – used to detect distracted journeys on Android devices.

The Momentum App keeps a constant notification on some devices and some specific device models to ensure that all journeys are recorded consistently. This constant notification won’t consume extra resources from the device.

If your journey doesn’t meet the minimum distance requirement, minimum duration recorded or doesn’t have sufficient location updates during the journey, it will be considered an “invalid journey”.

We will notify you when we record your journey.
